i just don't believe the way we treated the vietnam veterans were treated by us when they came home. i think the real problem is that all these agencies are way under staffed. another part is the drug problem a lot of them have. all we can hope for i guess is that we will wake up and get things going in the right direction
The only way we can correct the way our Veterans are treated is at the voting polls. Know who you are voting for and what they stand for. We don't need more of "You scratch my back and I will scratch yours" making decisions for our country. Maybe it is time for the ones of us that are unhappy with the way our country is being run to stand up and be counted. Do it at the voting polls.
This is a heart-rendering statistic. Within the past several months a new "Veteran's Home" was completed and opened in Shreveport, LA. I do not know what the criteria is for a veteran to be qualified to live there, but I do hope it is open to all--especially those who have been homeless. I have plans of volunteering at this center possibly with the Drama Troop that I am a member of or on my own. I would be willing to offer my services to write letters, read, visit, or use my musical abilities. All states and large cities should consider opening such a facility. We all "owe" those who put their own lives in jeopardy for our well-being. Additionally, we have all learned, myself from my friends who served in Viet Nam, that war often leaves 'invisible scars' on those who serve in the war zones. Many of my high school friends have never been able to maintain long-term relationships, overcome the nightmares, etc. from their time in "Nam". I am sure that the same holds true for those who served in wars before and since. These 'veterans' need our support as much now if not more than when they were in the war zones. We all need to place a priority on 'helping' them in any way that we can. God bless them all. Ellen Lee
we are from pre World War II era, and have seen men and women give of themselves to protect those at home, this country, and the freedoms so many take for granted, in every war this country has been involved in. They have been underpaid, called names, and treated very badly when they return home again. Yet, this country and the people in it, have them to thank for the protection they gave us, and for the freedom and good life we all have. What they are doing right now, without the moral support that is needed, is saving us again from those that want to kill us all. We have those that offend us by attempting to take our Christianity away from us, and do not want our troops to be supported by Government, want them to throw down their arms and run home. Well, should that happen, kiss your life goodbye, as the enemy will be on your doorstep. Support our troops, here and at war. Give them the respect they deserve, and do not let any go homeless or hungry. GOD BLESS our troops. and our country, AMEN. Jack and Laura Culp, married 61 years
I believe that the US needs to start taking care of its own The Armed forces are the strength of this Nation. Without them look where we would be? We have a mess all around us and it isan't going to get any better until our priorities are put where they belong. Every man in my family has been in the service. My son has 21 years. He was in Bagdad for 20 months - wounded several times. Lost alot of his health and definately his mental attitude. Of course he has been in all the conflicts since he is a scout. Now my grandson is in there too and he is just turned 18.-- I have met many of these homeless vets and ones that aren't homeless- They don't have a life either. I was married to one for 22 years that served 2 tours in Nam. Depression - loss of manhood - disrespected - unimportant - dreams - mental breakdowns. They are fighting for their sanity every day and they need help with health matters and mentally need alot of support & counciling. They have to have their place in society - They deserve it and not on the streets. They probably feel safer out there because they can't cope with a real life. Our country needs to wake up and stay home with alot of their assistance to peoople help our own! I have tried to help many by just listening & prayers.
I have always had respect for our country and especially for our men in service. They put their lives at risk, and many lose their life. The very least our "government" can do is spend as much time & money to care for them when they return as they did preparing them to go and kill or be killed. They "the government" spend more time and money helping our enemies rebuild the damages done--- that they caused. While our men, our grand-fathers, fathers, brothers, sisters ,children & grandchildren do without the basic care they desperately need and DESERVE. I,myself am disabled[not a veteran] and have some really bad days. I can never forgive myself(disabled or not) for not doing something for a man at the veterans' hospital. A elderly veteran, in a wheelchair trying to communicate to the pharmacy to get his medicines. The "JERK" working there said he could not hear him & sent this "Hero" to the back of the line because he had other people waiting!!! I will make a promise that if I am at all able, I will help any of our Heros that I possibly can and will respect & remind others to respect them. The Veteran hospitals that I myself have visited are totally a disgrace. I've seen animal hospitals cleaner & more organized,& animal patients given more care & consideration than what is provided for our HEROS--[you know---the ones who risk and lose their lives, lose body parts, have a difficult time living with what they have seen and had to endure. YES, I'M ANGRY!! Angry at our government or anyone else that speaks ill to or about our families , OUR HEROS !! Grand-daughter,daughter & Mother of Heros Joyce
I am a 10 year Veteran from the Korean War it is ashame how they used us and then when you want a little help they refuse you. I think it is the politican's that should be looked at,but they could care less at what happens to you when they are done with us. I am sure they will pay one of these days. They should have to live in dirt for a while like we did. Ken
Deep down in my heart I feel that thoes responsible for this war will have to answer someday. I lost my oldest son in Vietnam. One of my grandsons is in long term care in a VA hospital. There will be peace one day, until then we must all pray that our service people will come home and that their families will be there for them. With the holidays coming up let us all remember to send greetings and love to all that are serving our country and thoes that have come back. Peggie K.
I am a Viet Nam vet who by the Grace of God came back in one piece. I came back silently and slipped back into society avoiding the conflict of opinions that since the war was not our problem we should not have been there. People are still surprised when I admit that I am a Veteran. It is sad but our culture glorifies the maiming and killing that takes place in combat and the first thing young children want to know is "How many did you kill?". They listen to people talk about honoring this country's veterans and have no idea what that means. Their parents who may be the sons and daughters of war protesters do not and have not taught them because they themselves were not taught. Well to all who have served, I say thank you for your sacrifices. You have helped protect the innocent and uneducated of this great country including many who are part of the governing bodies called the Congress of the United States. "Thwy know not what they do" when they reject you.
The words homeless Veteran are (in my opinion) an oxymoron. ...kinda like "jumbo shrimp". There is no way this should EVER be. gloria
My husband is a veteran. He has been out of the armed forces for over 40 years and still has "nightmares" about it. The men and women who were and are in our armed forces should be the ones with top-priority. They risk their lives eveyday and where is their thanks. I will always respect our veterans and active duty service men and women. If it wasn't for them we would not be free. Every time you see a veteran thank him/her for all they have done and still do for our country.
I would just like to thank all the soldiers that have proudly served their country. Know that you are in my prayers each and every night. For the ones that have given up their lives, that is: "laid down their lives for their fellow man!" There is no greater honor and/or courageousness - even the Bible will attest to this. I hope and pray that there is a "special place" in heaven for your courageous souls to lay your head. May your families rise above the hurt and grieving they must feel with even a greater love for the sacrifices that you all have made. May our government STOP taking your sacrifices for granted and start treating you and your families with greater honor, respect and care. May our government start putting the interest and welfare of the American soldiers and the American citizens ABOVE the ALMIGHTY DOLLAR and BEGAN to bring THIS COUNTRY back to respecting the ALMIGHTY ABOVE, for which this COUNTRY was founded and moral principles were based. We have lost much of this countries greatness based on PROGRESS. But, in my humble opinion much of THIS PROGRESS has REGRESSED us into lack of caring, accountability, respect for one another, moral and culture decay. The LACK OF BACKBONE in our leaders have lead us into the selling out of America to the lobbiest among us. The fighting for winning votes have led the contenders to selling out each other. People use to WIN THEIR POINT with clarity and respect toward their fellow man. Today, anything goes! Both parties running for office set the worse example for our children. Arguing fairly hardly enters the game. It is NOW - WIN at any cost! It use to be: "it is how ONE WIN'S!" Also, "the way one plays the game!" was a respected notion! Now, it doesn't even enter into the equation. Our SOLDIERS are the BEST EXAMPLES of a COURAGEOUS and GIVING HEART! There is "NO GREATER GIFT!" THAT THEY HAVE GIVEN TO US AMERICANS AND TO OTHER COUNTRIES, THAN TO HAVE LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR FELLOW MAN! MAY I SAY THANK YOU FOR YOUR BRAVERY, THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME, THANK YOU FOR THE LOVE YOU HAVE EXTENDED TO US ALL. THANK YOU FOR THE BLOOD THAT YOU HAVE SHED ON OUR BEHALF! There will NEVER be enough said for what you COURAGEOUS SAINTS/SOLDIERS have done for us. This THANK YOU is for all the WORLD WARS fought on our behalf. This THANK YOU EXTENDS to ALL THE VETERANS EVERYWHERE! Especially, for the ones that have been treated with disdain for the unpopular wars! GOD BLESS YOU ALL! AND YES, I SAY THAT VERY PROUDLY!!!!!!! J.E. & D.E. from New Jersey
I believe this is a great shame on our country. We have welfare programs for people who have never done anything for our society. Why should our vets who have sacrificed so much for our country be part of the homeless people? There should be good places for them to live until they can get their lives back on track. I hope we as a people will rally behind every effort to support our troops. FM in Georgia
I think it is so very shamful that our Vets are often the homeless ones. I believe we should provide a home for them when they are unable to do it for themselves. F. C. Newton Atlanta, Ga.
I just read the comments of what others have said about our government and our "Homeless Veterans". I did not give my e-mail address and would like to add that to the comments given by my wife on my history in WW11. Morell Sherman WW11 Veteran and our e-mail address is "chicsherman@juno.com". Any comments are welcome.. We are Christians and proud of it. We love our God and our Nation..Chic Sherman aka Marion Sherman, wife of Morell Sherman
I think it is a shame!!! I believe charity begins at home. It seems that the "higher up's" in government believe we should help other countries and their problems before helping our own!! The "higher up"s give them selves nice big raises and then give us seniors a measly raise in Social Sec. while medicare eats that and more. My husband is a World 11 Veteran age 85. He has suffered wih depression, has 13 medals, including the Purple Heart, Bronze star etc. All his records were lost on a ship coming to the USA, during the war. Any record of him were lost in a fire in St. Louis Missouri were burned. (most all of the records from 1919 to 1959 burned in a fire. Check it our) We had a home fire Sept. 5th of 2005 and the medals he had in our safe did not mean a thing. They were not ingraved which they did not do in WW11. We were accused of maybe getting them at a Flea Market. He even had his "dog tag". He was in a hospital in New Guinea for 3 months from injuries, sent home on the Queen Mary which was converted into a hospital ship, he was treated at several hospitals and also Saranac Lake for recouperation. I could go on and on. He never asked for a thing when he was released. After our fire 2 years ago, he decided to go to the VA in Loma Linda, Ca. Because he was non-existant in the archives, they put him in "hardship case" for a year. He asked for compensation for hearing, depression etc. We have been married 59 years. Our marriage certificate and all records were lost in the fire. It took me over a year to research records and prove we were married, that he DID serve his country etc. He has tried to kill me in his sleep because he thought he was fighting the enemy and many many more dreams to mention. The VA finally gave his $115. amonth for his hearing loss. Bless their giving hearts! I feel sorry for the past and present Veterans that get the run aound that we have gotten. I do not get any thing because we married 3 years after he left the service, which I understand. Sorry for this long story but AGAIN, take care of our Homeless Veterans and show that WE do care! If you check with most WW11 veterans, you will find that most did not ask for anything when they left the service. They did their duty and went on with thier lives. It is biting them now such as my husbnd and many others. We have heard stories after stories how the WW11 Veteran have been ignored for cmpensation. GOD BLESS AMERICA. My husband loves the USA and is one of the most patriotic Veterans you will ever meet. He still cries when the flag is marched in parades etc. Morell J. Sherman writen by his wife.
Yes it is ashame the way the government use the veterans them forget about them. When they give their time and some their lives but they do not take care of them. The government use so much money for useless things, but forget to tale care of the one that may have saved some of their familys life.
This great nation of ours has its priorities all backward. Why give to people that are coming into our country while we have our own veterians and other Americans that need help. We need to thank the veterians for they are what has made this country great, without them just where would we be, speaking German or Japennse or other. We need to take back America, help our own, get the job situation corrected, and get back to MADE IN USA again leads the world. Denny Orem
I too think it is a shame to have so many homeless vets. Lets stop building memorials and put that money into homes for vets. The Vietnam wall and other memorials are great and I thank God for all who gave their life for the Great USA, but a home would help this problem.
God bless you for thinking and praying for all our Vets. My husband served at the Battle of the Bulge. He had a heart attack one year ago, but because of a lot of prayers and great doctors he is doing quite well at 84. God truly does heal. We our thankful for the community we are living in, it is always doing things for all the veterans, past and present. Very patriotic minded people. God bless them and all people like you. We appreciate it so much. Two years ago two of our sons took us to see the WWII Memorial and all the other war memorials in Washington D.C. It was quite an experience. America is truly a great country. I wish more people at the present time would realize how blest we really are. Thank you for sharing all your wonderful emails with us. God bless, from Minnesota.
There should never be a homless Vet or anyother person
I THINK IT IS A SHAME THEY WAY ARE COUNTRY HAS DONE ALL ARE VETS THAT HAVE SERVED AND SOME GAVE THERE LIVES FOR THERE COUNTRY THEN IT SEEMS THEY ALL HAVE BEEN FORGOTTEN THEY ONES THAT DID COME HOME PEOPLE OF THEY UNITED STATES SEEMS TO TURN THERE BACKS ON THEM WHEN THEY NEED HELP ITS REALLY A CRYING SHAME TO CALL ARE SELF AMERICANS AND DO ARE BOYS THEY WAY WE HAVE WHAT IF IT WAS YOUR LOVED ONE OUT IN THEY STREET AND NO FOOD ARE A PLACE TO LAY THERE HEAD COME ON PEOPLE THERE CAN BE SOME ONE TO HELP PUT SOMETHING TOGEATHER FOR ARE VETS. I THINK IT'S A REAL SHAME. OUR GOVERNMENT CAN'T GIVE AOUR SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN ANY KIND OF HELP, BUT THEY GIVE ILLEGALS ALL THE MONEY AND BENEFITS THEY WANT. THEY GIVE TONS OF MONEY AND HELP TO OTHER COUNTRIES, MINDING OTHER PEOPLES AND SAYING TO THE VETRANS GO TO HELL. WHEN THEY SHOULD BE THE FIRST IN LINE AND AFFORDED ALL KINDS OF BENEFITS. SOME LOST LIMBS, BUY IT SEEMS OUR GOVERNMENT TURNS A BLIND EYE TO THEM. BUT LET ANOTHER COUNTRY ASK FOR FAVORS AND THE U.S.A. JUMPS TO RESPOND. THEN THESE SAME COUNTRIES HATES UP AND THEY ARE WANTING ALL "AMERICANS" DEAD. PEOPLE HAVE TO REALIZE THEY HATE US, I'M SURE THE UPPER GOVERNMENT LEADERS LAUGH WHILE STEALING THE MONIES WE SEND OUR TO HELP THE UNDERPRIVILAGED. AND WE KNOW ONLY LESS THAN HALF GET TO THEM. MY LAST WORDS GEORGE BUSH AND CONGRESSPEOPLE TAKE CARE OF AMERICA FIRST. AND ESPECIALLY OUR VETERANS, PUT THEM IN THE FRONT LINE. THEY WERE GOOD ENOUGH TO STAND IN THE FRONT LINES TO DEFEND THE U.S.A. SO NOW HELP THEM. MY HEART BLEEDS FOR THE ONES THAT COME HOME MISSING BODY PARTS. HELP THEM FOR GOD'S SAKE.

It is shameful that such a rich nation should have ANY homeless people, much less homeless Veterans. I pray that all mankind unite to help all of those in need. Only through donating time and money can anything be done. Also, facilitating those in need with jobs and a way out of homelessness can anything be done. Our backs can't be turned on people who may not be well-dressed,or perhaps not as well spoken as some, our attention should be focused on finding help for these people who are willing to work. More affordable housing should be offered to everyone. I have no sure cure, but we must work together. God bless everyone! Elaine Drezinski
As a 61 year member of The Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars assisting Veterans and their families has been an important part of my life. VFW and Auxiliary members in Oklahoma volunteer at Sooner Stand Down for HOMLESS VETERNS. This is a 2 day affair providing sunshine for these HERO"S. All receive a large duffle bag and are given underclothing, socks, clothes, coats, personnel items and receive showers, haircuts, lawyers help with paper work, VA person visits about hospital check-up and help to return to society, work and home. All are provided 2 meals both days. All are very polite and many choose to remain homeless. I agree if our elected officials would be as dedicated as we thankful and caring citizens "HOMELESS VETERANS" would return to near "O" instead of increasing. Yes, My 4 brothers served in WWII, 1 in Korea, my husband WWII, Korea and our grandson is serving his 2nd tour in Iraq. Letters to congress, visits and calls must continue to provide the best for "AMERICA'S HERO'S". cbboz2@ecewb.com Clara Bozarth
There is no justification for a USA military person being homeless. It shows where our priorities are. We need to think about the values of the person we vote for. We also need to write to the people that are suppose to be representing us in DC and ask why a man or woman that was willing to lay down their life for us is living on the streets. I appreciate our military and I do know the sacrafices they are making and have made for us. God bless everyone of them. From the widow of a 27 year Submarine Sailor.
I think it is a shame that we have homeless veterans or any homeless people for that matter. We live in a land of plenty, God has blessed this nation in so many ways. I feel that God's punishment is coming on this nation for not taking care of our own. God expects his people to help the less fortunate. Just remember "If not for the Grace of God, there go I".
America may be "land of the free and home of the brave", until the UPPER MANAGEMENT of America's business's, labor unions and political systems are receiving the same dollars per hour wages they provide for the working poor; AMERICA will have the soup kitchens, and other efforts of us "lessor folk" to try to provide and share what we do have with those in need. Why can't the companies who so willingly send millions of dollars to Africa, and other needing nations, provide the same assistence to our own America. Some time ago, as a child I was told that charity begins at home. What would be the results if the Vet's were provided with the equivalent retirement pay that retired government officials are given. And the Gov's did not risk their lives to earn it. SINCERELY, rjsbe@yahoo.com
I think the goverment should use some of the displaced money & try to help the homeless vet find homes.Wish I had lots of money. I would try to build a home just for homeless Vets. Alice
my husband served over 21 years in service as a paratrooper. i think it is a shame for our country to have homeless verterns. thanks.
My prayers are for not only our Veterans and currently serving military men and women. (I have 2 son's in the Air Force.) I pray for our President , our senators, our congress men and women. I pray that they might know our true God and reach out to him for guidance in making decisions that will protect our service personal from the past , present, and future. I pray that they're motives for making decisions that affect them and us be pure and not for selfish gain. I pray that our schools and learning staffs for our children be Christians that will help guide our kids while growning and learning that they might know God and love our country that God has blessed them with. That they might grow in respect and devotion to the true principals that our country was founded on. That they might truely care for one another and once again become "ONE NATION UNDER GOD", not divided but United. Thanks for the weekly letter. It really is very nice and I love to share it with others. God Bless You All grannybear1948@comcast.net
Its a sad day when people that saved our lives, made it so we can have the freedom that we are supposto have are homeless, living in the streets, under bridges, or wherever. Where are there families? why arent they taking them in, or helping to take care of them, their fighting in wars was for them as well as me. I couldnt even begin to imagine my father , if he were living would be homeless in this day and age. I'll be praying for all those out there thats cold and hungry or just missing family members come this winter and everyday... God Bless you all and shame on you who let them live this way. Shame on our Government for not finding a place for them to live.Shame on our Government for not helping them live a decent life, but we can send money to other countries to help them have a life. Shame on you all
All to often people forget that without the struggles and the sacrfices that all the men and women from past and present wars have gone through or are going through our conutry would not be as free as it is today. I want to thank each and every Veteran that has helped this country stand on it's feet. You are what makes this country the land of the free and home of the brave. Without your hardwork and dedication we would be in a world of hurt. Thank you for everything. "Welcome Home."
Well I think there is something wrong because I served my time and was very proud to do so I didn't do drugs to screw up my mind so as to live outside of reality . If the people realy want to do something , than put a stop on the dope in the world that is mesing up so many good people's mind . If we tighten up our borders and become freinds agan and stop worring about that all mighty DOLLAR , we can keep our country safe from all that has caused homeless vets . Rob.
American Vets - I salute you, I respect you, I honor you. No one likes war, no one wants to go to war. Our Vets did the job. They paid the price, sometimes for life, sometimes with their life. Our government should honor these men and women with education and career training, life time quality health care and decent housing. A government's true concern for its citizens is made transparent by the way it treats it sickest, most vulnerable and neediest. As citizens of this nation we need to vote for the leaders who support this, will act on it, and make it happen.
I have seen alot of heros in my 56 years and know of so many more, if any Vet reads this I say "Thank You" for never letting us down, sorry we can't return the favor. My Father was in WWII and the Korean War, I was taught to consider any one who has been in the service(past, present, future) deserves the best, and you do, even if we don't show it, know all of you are heros and are held with the highest reguard..God Bless all of you Cecilia Jaconetti
I THINK IT IS A SHAME HOW ARE COUNTRY LET THE VETS DOWN. IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE VET WE WOULD NOT BE FREE. GOD BLESS OUR VETS GOD BLESS AMERICA
I totally agree with you that we need to do something about this. What a terrible shame for our wealthy country to have so many homeless veterans, and other peoples also. I am Sec./Treasurer of our Rock Springs, Wy. SWATCH Committee, and we have been trying for 2 years to get either property or a suitable building to help the homeless here in Southwest Wyoming. We just lost our VA Grant because of the difficulty we are having to aquire the land or building, and will have to reapply this coming January. But, unless we get enough funds or a contribution of land or building, then we face loosing it again! We are desperatly trying to help these people!!! The VA says that we have almost 6,000 homeless Vets in the US; what a shame!!! God help us!!! Bernice Shuster e-mail BEAANDSHU@MSN.COM
It really saddens me to know that the people who put their lives on the line in order for us to be free, does not have a place to live, or a place to call home. We as Americans need to be more conscious of what is happening to our Heroes, and reach out, and help them who really deserve our help. Patricia A. Brown
We had a shelter started for homeless Veterans,in PanamaCity Florida. We kept it going for two years and could not get any local or fedareal support. It's a shame that a home that had found jobs and VA help for a few Veterans had to close. Thats the thanks the Veterans got in Bay County Florida. The good old Boys system prevailed.
This is truly a disgrace to our country. And a real 'slap-in-the-face' to our service people - past, present and future. It's time for ALL our lawmakers to quit concentrating on 'Pork Barrel' projects; WAM (walking around money); enhancing their pensions and welfare benefits; and start doing what they SHOULD have been elected for: Furthering the good of ALL our country and it's legal inhabitants. Let's also enforce out immigration laws. Fat chance of it ever happening, but a law should be enacted that, upon conviction, a lawmaker or public official should be stripped of his/her benefits and forfeit any further pay or pension. Perhaps then we could get back to some basics that our country was founded on and which made it great.
Hi, I think this is the awfulest thing I have ever heard. I am ashamed that this is happening to our veterans. Something should be done about this. I am a 77 year old widow and I can't do much, especialy money wise. Some of the rich people should do something. Your friend in Christ, Imogene(IKnight912@aol.com)
I personaly don't think there should ever be a homeless vet, I think that in every city and state in this Nation should have homes just for the vets that do not have a home of their own. I think they should be big enough that each vet would have a room of their own that they could keep their stuff and come and go as they please without worry that someone is going to take their stuff, and if they have a substance abuse issue that they could get help right there on the primises, and also a large hall that feed's them every day 3 meals a day and let some of the vets do the cooking, and let them take turns in cooking and also others should help keep the place clean. And if they don't want to do their share then they could find some place else to live and they ones that have jobs could do other things on their days off like keeping the lawn mowed and maybe a garden if their is room enough for them to have a large garden. Sincerely Milton L. & Juanita Skidmore
To me it is a disgrace for the United States of America to have any homeless, uncared for Veterans. It seems to me that somehow the prisoners could be put to work, under guard, to build homes for the Vets.In prison the inmates are well taken care of, warm, dry ,fed, clothed and do not have to sleep on the street. Don't the Vets deserve the the same? They gave up famiy, home and in many cases their lives to keep America free and safe.
I am a Vietnam combat vet. I was there in 1966-1967. I came back, sought what I wanted and accomplished what I wanted to do. I spent 27 years in law enforcement. True some vets can't make it, but I think some fake it cause they think we owe them something more. Well they need to try harder, and trust in God, and they can accomplish their goals as I did. All I can say is never surrender, be an acheiver.
I think it is shameless how our vets are treated when they come home after serving. Our country treat the elligals better than our vets. They give them housing food and they even get a job.But the vets can't get help.I am very thankful for all our vets. Susnn Yoho Pa.
I cannot believe how many homless veterans there are. This should not be. If anything they should be the first to be taken care of. The government should be ashamed of this situation. They did so much for our country and are all heroes. God Bles them all.
I don't think that we should have any homeless Veterans. They gave for our country and our country should take care of them healthwise, making sure they have a home and take care of any other of their needs. I think there should be apartment complexes especially for Veterans no matter what their income. Rent should be on a sliding scale and if they are unemployed our country needs to find some type of work for them with pay. May God Bless each and every one of our Veterans.
NO ONE SHOULD BE HOMELESS IN THE WORLD TODAY WITH ALL WE HAVE AND ALL WE KNOW. MY FAMILY HAS TRIED TO HELP OUT EVERYONE WE KNOW WHO IS BETWEEN HOMES. AS FAR AS OUR VETERANS GO THEY SHOULD NEVER BE WITH OUT A HOME AT ANY TIME!!!!!
It is sad to know that we have a President who'se folks hid him in the Air National Guard so he wouldn't be placed in Harm's way. And a vice presidet who never saw a deferment he didn't like...Yet, those two, and many others in Congress who failed to answer the Country's call when asked to step forward, are the ones who are beating their chests and "talking the talk'. Unfortunaetly, the 'cowards didn't have the guts to "walk the walk". Legitimate deferments were understandable, but not the ones who had 'beter things to do', like Cheney, for one. If they are going to send our brave men and women into battle, then we have an obligation to take care of them when they return. If they can no longer work, we have to take care of their needs. It is the least we can do.. Sadly, if the draft had been re-instated, we wouldn't be at war, because it is obvious that the Congressmen and women wouldn't have placed their own kids in harm's way. A sad situation.. Bless the true heroes'.....
Why are vets homeless? Why did they slip through the crack? Why can't they get a job and keep it? They were able to do the job in the service and apparently quite well. I would fix it if I could but my ex marine husband is disabled with emphysema and everything falls to me now. Although he farmed for 50 years.
A Vet I Met On the corner of Broadway stands a man with a sign. "WILL WORK FOR FOOD." People walk by and ignore him. Some are downright rude. "Get out of the way!" "Do you have any change brother?" I started to turn away when something caught my eye. He had a poppy on the lapel of a ragged Army coat. I handed him some money, and he said, "Bless you." I was going to move on, but decided to chat on this chilly day. "We could talk a bit, if you are in the mood." He eyed me carefully from under a tattered hat brim, then words came to him. "I was in Vietnam in 1972. That was a bad time dude." One memory led to another, and we wandered into Ryan's for a burger and coffee. Families looked at us curiously, or asked for their bill and eyed us like we ruined their day. He never told me what brought him to such a low state, and I never asked, but I know we shall meet again when God calls the final roll. I had to finish my errands, so I shook his hand and said take care. With a smile and thank you, he wished me God's blessing, handed me the poppy that had caught my eye. On the corner of Broadway stands a man with a sign. "WILL WORK FOR FOOD." -Lou Marin
What a disgrace we are to these Honerable men & women to allow this to happen, I cannot express the shame I feel. Our goverment seems to have no problem shelling out money for some of the most ridiculous things but we are not capable of taking care of the ones who made this country the great country it is We all need to be on our knees praying as God will not continue to accept this. I pray that these honerable men and women know there are thoes of us out here who have the highest regard for them. May God Bless each of them!
I pray every day for our countey and our fighting men ahd women. We should give them enough RETIEMENT to have a good living and that means a good home. We need to call our Nation to Prayer.Every day not just in time of War. Claude B. Kelley
This is without a doubt a disgrace...Our Vets should be treated as a treasure in this country and it is shameful that they are not...Where would we all be without their commitment to this country. We would probably be under some dictators thumb and have no freedoms at all...
We should all be willing to do something about this shameful situation. I wrote my comgress men and woman. Too bad we can't do any more for those who served our country and helped mantain our freedoms, but we can literally pour help on those who sneak over our borders or who have child after child without benefit of marriage. God will repay!!!
WHY IS IT THE GOVERNMENT CAN SEND MONIES ALL OVER THE WORLD AND NOT TAKE CARE OF THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE FOUGHT FOR THEIR RIGHTS TO LIVE FREE? WHY IS IT BETTER TO HELP OTHERS WHEN OUR GOVERNMENT WON'T HELP THEIR OWN. I AM VERY,VERY PROUD OF OUR MEN AND WOMEN IN THE MILITARY! I BY THE WAY HAVE A GRANDSON IN THE MARINES SERVING IN IRAQ AND I HAVE A SON SERVING IN THE MARINES WHO WAS IN IRAQ WHEN WE FIRST WENT THERE. I WILL DEFEND BOTH OF THESE MEN AGAINST ANYONE THAT WANTS TO DISHONOR THEM. MY SON HAS NOT BEEN IN THE MARINES FOR 13 YEARS DOING NOTHING AND I WILL NOT TOLERATE ANYONE SAYING ANYTHING AGAINST HIM. THANK YOU VETERNS!
There are no words to express the gratitude for all you have given to keep us safe. You will NOT be forgotten and we will be eternally grateful for the courage that you show each day in fighting for our freedom. God Bless You Always and bring you home safely!!! Ginny Bellamy/Elkhart, Indiana
I think it is a disgrace. These men and women leave their families and friends and everything held near and dear to them to go half way around the world to serve their country, loosing their lives and limb....How dare we, the United States of America not treat them like heroes when they come back and give them everything they need? My husband served in the Viet Nam war. Thankfully he came back with all his body parts and was able to pick up and develop a life for his wife and 4 children, but has never been the same as when he left to go over there. Disgrace and Sad
THEY HAVE SERVED AND PROTECTED THIS COUNTRY AND I CAN'T IMAGINE HOW TERRIBLE IT MUST FEEL TO COME HOME AND BE TREATED AS IF THEY ARE NOT WORTHY OF BEING A PART OF THIS COUNTRY AND I AM SURE THAT IS HOW SOME MUST FEEL!
I too think it is a disgrace and shame on all of us for ignoring the plight of our HERO veterans. I have "adopted" a local veterans home and I can't even begin to tell you the happiness that these brave men show by me when I show up with baked cookies, cakes, food, used clothes, etc. They were leary of me in the beginning, but now they come out of the woodwork when I visit. They love to talk and laugh. They are living in a converted motel, but it's clean and they are responsible for all the cooking and cleaning. If you see a homeless veteran, report it to the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, etc. They will find a home for them. Please show your thanks to these wonderful people by seeking out your local veterans homes and giving a little bit of your time. It makes a world of difference to them and just a thanks would make their world a lot happier.
It's such a shame we show so little disregard for the men and women who put their lives on the line for all of us. With all the waste in government spending you'd think we'd better utilize these monies and use them where it would benefit the ones who deserve it most. Shame on us!!!
I think it is a shame that a country like America can come to the aid of other countries and leave their own wallowing in poverty and neglect and fighting for their very existence on the streets, sick, hungry, broke and homeless. Shame on America! Our veterans should be provided with the best assistance that we can provide both medically and otherwise. God bless our veterans.
First of all, Hello! Thank you for this site and this topic. I live in AZ and see many beggers who hold signs. Many of them say they are homeless vets. Sometimes I get to say thank you, say a prayer, get a name, give a little.....other times I wonder if it's a scam and if God is testing me. So, my comment is that if they're are goverment agencies to specifically address these particular issues, then many of them (the homeless vets) are starring us in the face, and can easily be found. I would love to sear that part of their job was to seek out these men and women. Thank you to all the veterans. I hold my freedom dear.
I personally think that it is a disgrace that our government is more interested in the taking care of illegal people in our country than the the veterans of the past wars & now this war. This also goes for the business people that will not help with veterans in hiring them. I know that a veteran cannot live & raise a family on what little amount they receive. God Bless the Veterans for what they have gone through to keep this country free. (a veteran's daughter)
I thiink it is a shame the way all veterans are being treated. They seem to always want to cut the benifits they do get in one way or another. They seem to forget that they not anyone else are the ones that keep our country free not anyone else. I have had three generations in the Army on from WW2 and when he would hear and see some of the things that were happening it made him very upset.
Is it possible that veterans become homeless to protect themselves from the horrors they have experienced? They may feel it is a shield so they won't see pain and hurt again, can't much blame them for that. It would be nice if we all could forgo any pain. However, that's not the case, I also feel many people, not just veterans, CHOOSE to be homeless. Don't get me wrong, NO ONE should be homeless in this country, especially when we are giving government benefits to the illegal Mexicans who are here. They haven't had to fight for anything, it's just handed to them. And during this time, the veterans are forgotten, dishonored, and left under a bridge....Where is the honor for them? God bless all the veterans, this country they fought for certainly won't!

Our Veterans are HEROES. We would not be here doing what we do today if it were not for them. My father was in WW II, my son and daughter were in the Persian Gulf War, and now my youngest son is active military with the US Army. I am so proud of all them and all of our military for sacrificing what we take for granite. We as Americans should help them get their lives back to some type of normalcy when they return. We will never know exactly what went on there in those streets or hills because we were not there, we only know what we hear. We don't have to live day in and day out in the same clothes and maybe even go hungry. As Americans we need to step up and fight for "Our Heroes" and do not let them be forgotten. I salute all of our military and Veterans for their sacrifices. May God Bless Them, watch over them and keep them safe as he will do for their families. We love you all.
As a veteran, I feel the homeless veteran issue is a national disgrace!!! We all served our country with honor and pride and being dumped by our country for the sake of political correctness and the unwillingness of our state and federal congresses to fund shelter and interim housing programs is a monumental stab in the back to each and every veteran. I work with a number of veterans organizations and the feedback on this issue and the health care issue would frighten the general public. They just don't have a clue about what is happening to our veterans and worse yet, they don't care. That's a fine thank you to those of us who have voluntarily answered the call. As one young Iraqi war Marine told me, "Congress needs to put their money where their mouth is ... naming a school or street after us does not feed nor clothe us nor does it train us to resume a normal place in society." The government; i.e., the VA in particular; can dawdle long enough that we oldsters will die off and that part of the problem will be solved. What is really scarey is seeing the Iraqi War boys showing up in the homeless population. This is happening in increasing numbers and given their average age, they will be a long time in that statistic. May Heaven help them and God bless them! Peggy Randle HM2 USN
We need to remember our Veterans. I heard a report on the news the other day that there are more homeless veterans from this war. We need to thank them for what they have done. The government needs to give more funding so VA hospitals and homes can serve these men and women. My husband was in the Vietman war,he was discharged from the Army in 1972, and he still has bad dreams, the current war has added to them. Just imagine what it is like to live carry your rifle with you at all times, to live the way they do in a war zone.
The Viet Nam veterans were treated the worst of all vets, when they came home. No soldier should ever be homeless or go hungry or get sub-standard medical care. As we've seen, they do get losy health care. Give thanks to all soldiers and veterans, the goverment seems to turn their back on them, the men and women who fight/fought for our freedom. This is anabomination!
Our God has blessed our USA---why can't the people in Washington wake up and pass the laws we need to get rid of these who come into our country and get things free and never do the first thing to earn these rights? May God bless our servicemen and women each and every day, keep them safe, warm and fed to return home to their love ones, they do a great service to each of us, to keep our USA free. I, FOR ONE, AM PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!!! B. Edwards of N.C.
After serving in any war to protect our country, I feel our country is obligated to fulfill our service people's needs; otherwise it is a slap in the face for all their sacrifices. Our country doesn't seem to have any problem giving other countries a hand-out. God Bless our servicemen and women and thank you one and all. Sincerely, M. G. Healy New Jersey
I truly believe that if our government employees would get up off their duffs and commit themselves to the veterans, there would be far, far less homeless veterans in our nation. I also believe that they are getting way too much salary, tax breaks, health insurance etc. They should try and live on the income of an average person in the central U.S. Things would change drastically and quickly for the better. They should try and get along with both parties instead of fighting all the time.
Our vets should never homeless. They should get the same treatment some of our illegals are getting. Social Security, medcaid and other perks who a lot of us don't qualify because we have a pension.
I think it is a shame for vets to have to sleep under bridges. But at the same time the government will keep up a race of people that is not a citizens in the USA.And has never went to war for the USA. And they have the gall to come here and burn the flag. What is wrong with this picture? Wake up America! HELLO
Our country helps all the people of the world. However those that should be helped first are our heros who have left home and familys to serve in other countries should be helped first. When they come home and find they and there families in need. they should be able to get a o % loan from our government. To help them rebuild there lives. Also every one of us should help them rebuild there lives. If every one that reads this just drops what ever they can in an envelope we can all be part of the solution. We thank our vets for protecting us now it is time to do more i had no idea there was homeless veterns in the greatest country in the world. Help us find a way to help them NOW when they need our help. THANK YOU SOLDIER FOR YOUR GIVING THANK YOU SOLDIER FOR THE WAY YOU HAVE PLACED THE PRICE OF FREEDOM ABOVE YOUR DREAMS OF YESTERDAY. This is from a world war 2 poem.
The veterans and service men and women are to be commended for protecting us and our country while their families are fending for themselves. They are a rare breed and the do not get the thanks and praise they deserve. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart to loving our country and being willing to protect us from all harm. God bless each of you.
Veterans will always have a special place in my heart. I feel they do keep others from attacking us. History does show that the weak get picked on the most. Seems to me everyone, especially the vets, we should provide them with jobs, healthcare, homes, and everything else they need. My thanks to all the veterans. Steven
