I fully agree that the prescription drug costs to Americans are outrageous, and that Americans should be able to purchase prescriptions in Canada. One thing seems to be overlooked, however. The cost of buying drugs in Canada, if you do not live close to the border, or have them shipped to you, may exceed what you will pay at, say, COSTCO. When I sent for a catalog from Canada, I learned that I would also pay Canadian tax, as well as shipping and handling costs for each order. Okay if you can afford to buy a year's supply, but on my income it is a month-to month expense (not to forget that I am a senior and may not live long enough to consume a year's supply, or that prescription needs may change within a year. Comparing totals, once you consider transportation fees to get there, or Canadian charges (which are not advertised)for shipping and handling and taxes, I found that the cost to me would be the same. We can't buy medicine in Canada because it's not profitable to the President and all his friends !!!!! If you can't screw Americans who can you screw??? It is so evident that President Bush has really made Americans look bad in the eyes of other countries and he is just too stubborn to admit it.. President Bush will never have to worry about paying for medications since he will always have enough money to pay for what ever he and his family needs...He thinks the Medicare card is the answer to everything and it's not...we need help and a new President...

I am working for the 4th largest bank in America. Our healthcare benefits have been cut, the cost to us for these benefits have been raised and many times I find I am paying at least half the price of the medicine as compared to what my good: insurance policy pays. As I get closer to retirement I fear I will never have my meds. I have diabetrs an many times have to wait till I save enough to get all my meds going without for a month or two. Another thing Dr.s are cutting back on there expense by writing multiple scripts on one page, this does not allow me to get them one a a time as I can afford them I just have to wait longer to save the money to get them all at once. Oh how times have changed!!!

I have excellent health insurance and can affort the price of the co-pay on medications -- however what's going to happen when the government makes us go on the medicare plan for those drugs. And why make the change? Regarding the BSE [mad cow disease] in their infinite wisdom our esteemed Washington leadership has opened the Canadian borders this month July 2005 to cattle under the age of 30 months, which they deem to be safe. At the same time the US Government will be forcing US beef raisers to install a device [probably in the ear] in of all cattle raised in the USA. This device will allow them to track that animal for it's life. Some of the proposed plans include being able to track that animal when it is moved from one field to another. So far one cow raised in the USA, in Texas has been proven to have BSE. They killed the whole herd -- the rancher's entire herd --- to test for this disease. They did not find another animal that had it. But, the rancher no longer has his cows. Daily many thousands of illegal Mexican citizens cross the southern border into the USA. These same Washington leaders cannot figure out how to track and locate these illegals. Doesn't it make more sense to be figuring out the solution to this problem than the how to track millions of cattle from birth to death? George Carlin expressed the solution to this problem, he said just give each illegal alien a cow, then we could find them! To Brian Schweitzer, governor of Montana, keep up the good work. And protect your Montana beef and dairy herds from those coming across the border from Canada!

HOW ARE WE IN THE UNITED STATES GOING TO GET OUR CONGRESS TO HELP US? THEY ARE TOO BUSY TRYING TO HELP BIG BUSINESSES GET WHAT THEY WANT AND IN RETURN THE COMPANIES THROW BACK MONEY AND IT'S JUST LIKE A GAME. THE SENATE AND HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES WILL NOT BE STRUGGLING ON MEDICARE AND SOCICAL SECURITY WHEN THEY RETIRE OR BECOME DISABLED,BECAUSE THEY WILL NEVER BE ON IT. THEY CAN JUST SIT BACK AND CONTINUE TO RECEIVE THE SAME PAY AS THEY WERE RECEIVING WHILE STILL IN CONGRESS.AT 53 YEARS OLD, I NEVER THOUGHT I'D BE ON DISABILITY. THINGS CHANGE OVERNIGHT! I, TOO, HAVE TO CUT SOME OF MY MEDS. IN-HALF. ONE OF THEM, I HAD TO COMPLETELY QUIT AND I WENT TO AN OVER-THE -COUNTER-MED.,THAT'S LESS EFFECTIVE. THE WHOLE BUSINESS JUST MAKES ME SICK. It's not just the medicine that is so expensive in America, it's the whole medical field. I was in the hospital in China for eight days earlier this year. I had a private room, two ultra sounds, two series of x-rays, bld tests daily and two week supply of medicine to take home. The whole hospital, including the doctor's care came to less then $1,000.00 American money! The care was terrific and the facility was modern and clean. I'm grateful to all the staff and doctors. Why is medical care and medicine so much more expensive in America?

The drugs in Canada are paid for partly by the government (the people there living in Canada are paying for it) and sooner or later they will tire of US citizens buying drugs there and it will stop. Would you want them to come here, apply for Medicaid or other assistance programs like Together RX, Lilly Answer Cared and get drugs here? And in doing so have us pay (in the end) for their drugs? We wouldn't like that and in time would make it stop. As for the cows don't know.

Hello From Wisconsin,(formaly from Ohio) Although , I feel Ohio is the best place in the world to raise children. I've always wanted to move to Montana and have the opportunity to have lots and lots of land to live off, just like the olden days. So this is my comment if only we could go back in time when every one didnt take a pill for everything you know. "GOD" gave us perfect bodies and yes sometimes they give out or need a little help but pumping all these chemicals into our children and elders is not the answer, now for things like heart medicne, asmatha, things that are life and death I almost understand. I myself am supposed to use Advair to breath and at times I find it very hard to breath but I stopped using the medicine for that same reason (cost)and so far Im still alive that is me. The reason America wont let any person get or do from any where else is because then there not in control, they say freedom every where but its not really our choice or acting on our own behalf its what they want for us what they think is good for us, even that is questionable who are we to play God If GOD made the whole world then whats the problem who has the biggest toys ? Hate to tell you all but you dont get to take any of it with you "ALL YOU GET IS THE MEMORIES YOU MAKE" So think about that and insteed of all the disagrements and the high cost of everything think of all those people out there not taking the medicine they really do need because they cant afford it oh I know go get on public assistance then the government can really track you they want all of us dependant that is why they make it hard to obtain the things you really need place to live, food, clothing, why do you think all of that is available when you get assistance because then some one else is in charge. If im not mistaken in Canada you can go to the doctor anytime and you pay a set fee I think even on Saturday. I found that interesting seeings how we have "8" children do you know how many times over the weekend We would need a doctor and had to go to Emergency room for something so simple as high fever. I say simple because there is much worse conditions. Let me tell you it cost about $250.00 for being a concered parent. this letter could go on and on you know? so I will go for now maybe some of what I commented about makes sense "Go back to the Olden Days If Only We Could" How different would things be today........ concerned Mother of 8

I would be for a 4 year term limit. Also, every one of them would be on Social Security like the rest of the population. Tell the drug companies to put 'the USA drug trade' where the "sun doesn't shine"! It is time for the people to take back the government like what was intended by our ancestors and fought for by our soldiers. We are being taxed without true representation and our rights taken away one by one, and given to the criminals... Put GOD AND DISCIPLINE back into our schools, courts, and homes. Thank you! I vote without fail & I encouraged others to vote for our President & even donated to the party & I believed in the many Christian standards I believed that our President stood for. Now I ask myself what has happened? My prescription drugs have been changed even when my doctor's have written special notices to Medicaid saying I cannot tolerate "their" substitutes...my State of IL refuses me my prescriptions, my pharmacy says if I want to keep taking the medicines I have been on I will have to pay them "full" price. Soon I will not be able to even get up from a chair when my arthritis medicine is switched to a medicine I cannot tolerate which means I will have to go without any medication because I cannot afford the medicine I have been using. Recently, I was informed that the U.S.A. will take over "all" Medicaid persons' prescriptions from Jan., '06. I cannot afford what I need to have and because of sensitivities, I cannot take certain substitutes. What is next for the poor who vote, who are still living a halfway decent life because their medicines were helping them? I feel hopeless & helpless. Pres. Bush has totally disappointed me & I so believed in him. We are being crushed.

Just another example of big money running the U.S. congress. Isn't it ridiculous? We live in a democracy if you have enough money to influence federal legislation. How did it ever come to that? Answer - the privilege to serve in the U.S. congress has become so lucrative that it is almost impossible to remove anyone - even if you are fortunate enough to elect a new face, when the new face arrives in Washington the old moss backs (Byrd of WVA et al) take the new face into the back room and say, "Now, this is how we play the game". How in the world can this be changed? Eugene Macey Tigard, Or.

Both my husband & I are on medications that are just about impossible to buy on a fixed income. Try about $550.00 a month! Congress needs to sit up and take notice that more and more baby boomers are not living on upper middle class incomes. A lot of people live either in lower middle class or in poverty and cannot buy their meds. As for the person who said they could't catch the side effects on the commercials, let me put it this way, the ailment is nothing compared to the side effects!! Go with a naturalist and get on a healthy diet. Most fruits and vegetables do more for you than most of the expensive meds! I know because that's how I'm treating some of my health problems.

PEOPLE ARE GETTING MORE AND MORE SAVVY ABOUT PROTECTING THEIR OWN HEALTH BY USING VITAMINS AND MINERALS. THE PHARMS ARE AFRAID THAT THEY WON'T REAP THE HUGE PROFITS OF THE PAST FROM PHARMACEUTICALS BECAUSE VITAMINS AND MINERALS ALSO HAVE THE POWER TO HEAL AND THEY DO NOT HAVE SIDE EFFECTS. MEDS (THOUGH THEY ARE OSTENSIBLY A NECESSARY EVIL) DO HAVE SIDE EFFECTS. LISTEN TO THE COMMERICIALS ON TV FOLKS. AT THE END OF THE COMMERCIAL THEY RUN THROUGH THE SIDE EFFECTS SO FAST IT WOULD MAKE YOUR HEAD SWIM. PLEASE, IF YOU CARE ABOUT OUR FREEDOMS, LET CONGRESS KNOW THAT YOU DO NOT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN. As a Canadian beef producer I am outraged at your article. The BSE testing program in Canada far outranks the shoddy testing program in the US and we admit to having found a number of BSE cases all in older animals- non of which entered the food chain. In Canada we don't eat brain and spinal cords of cattle and all potentially infective materials are removed from older cattle prior to meat processing. To put it all into some kind of a perspective that R-CALF can understand: there has been a million cases of BSE in cattle in Great Britian which have been consumed, brains and all, and 140 thats ONE hundred and forty cases of the human form of BSE has shown up there over a 15 year period. Not exactly an epidemic is it? Whether or not the border opens has become immaterial to a lot of us as our processing plants open at the expense of the US processing industry we are hoping to again have some semblance of an industry. And yes I do enjoy eating a nice SAFE Canadian steak at every opportunity.

I agree with you 100%! I have written to President Bush regarding this same subject. My concerns were mostly with contaminated beef and the Mad Cow Disease, because we do not inspect every cow that is going to be used for human consumption. Other countries do inspect every cow that is to be consumed by the public. Japan is one country in particular that believes in the inspection of the brains of the cows to be consumed by their people. I always believed our leader were there to protect the American people and do the best by their welfare. If getting us cheaper prices on safe prescription medicine isn't one of their priorities, no wonder they are not worried about the beef we consume. In my opinion, it is only a matter of time, before we are faced with the same problem that the United Kingdom has just been through. Afterall, Mad Cow disease has a 10-year time line, before it begins to rear its UGLY HEAD!!!!! Thank you so much for your concern for the consumer. My husband and I appreciate your thoughts on this subject. J.E.

WOW, the Gov. of Montana sure has his head on straight. We know there is an organization of the 50 state governors. Would it be to much to ask him to ask the rest of the governors to join him and act in unison in spreading this information to every citizen in this country and then to simply ask them to let their Congressmen and women know how they feel about the dual standard impossed upon us all by a Congress that does NOT represent the people, but rather represents the PACs with deep pockets. Thomas Jefferson would not even recognize our government functions today. Bill & Darlene Harrison of Rockport, Tx.

If the medicines in Canada are from the same manufacturers as those sold in the USA, then why can't the manufacturers of the drugs sell them in the USA for the same price??..Recently a pharmaceutical company has adverstized, the sale of this product help finance research...Doesn't the US Govt. help subsidize this endeavor for the drug manufacturers? It is also possible to go into Mexico and purchase drugs for less than Canada and no one stops anyone from crossing over, making a purchase and returning to the USA...How is it that US Customs looks the other way for small purchases in Mexico and not Canada?? From Mexico they are only interested in locating the large caches of methamphetamines...What is it about Canada that the USA is afraid of??

the answer is very simple...money! the pharmeceutical companies have some convoluted tale about why they have to make higher profits on drugs sold in the usa...that without that money they wouldn't be able to research new medidations. it's a load of malarkey...they will continue to research, that's their future, their bread and butter ten or twenty years from now. they just don't want to give up lining their own pockets with green and gold. janie

As a Canadian, and in a farming community, I have read and heard much about "Mad Cow Disease". I think it is a known fact that it has been around for many years, in EVERY country, but called other names. I believe tests have shown that it would be nearly impossible for a person to consume enough beef to be affected. I don't believe this is the issue that is concerning border crossing at all...it is political, as is most things. As a Canadian, I feel very fortunate in our medical system although we grumble about it at times also. I really feel sorry for Americans who have to cope with your medical costs. I truly believe that prescription drugs nescessary for anyone s health should be affordable to everyone. Perhaps if less money was spent on "government favorites" and things that make them look very important, and more on the citizens welfare it would be more to the point.

Hello: I am a Canadian, and so "my thoughts are not your thoughts". I have no problem with you coming to Canada to pick up your drugs because of the cheaper price. There must be an awful difference in the prices to make it worth while, as I have seen the prices on some of our drugs and I think they are very high. I am a WW2 veteran and on what they consider a "low income" and so I get all my drugs with no cost to me, for which I am very thankful. Re your statements re the "mad cow" disease I disagree wholeheartedly with what your governor or whoever, has told you. There was one case of "mad cow" disease in Canada and the USA closed their borders, many years ago. Then, somewhere in the States there was a case of "mad cow" and they somehow traced it back, in its ancestry to Canada, so again we were the "bad boys". However, there have been proven cases of "mad cow" in the USA which are bonafide USA originals, only they choose to call them by another name in your country. When the testing has been done in Great Britain, it has been confirmed that these cases were "mad cow" Because USA is a big country, people wise, they tend to try to control other countries, and in some things they are successful. It is unfortunate though, that, because of this tendency in many ways, you are losing a lot of respect from other countries. I have travelled a fair amount, and the number of USA citizens who wear Canadian flags to identify their country of origin is tremendous. I am a 81 year old widow, and my only dealings with the beef industry is at the grocery store.

About your Governor's comments regarding the 'not so safe' beef..what a load of BS. Everyone knows that your beef is also 'not so safe' but your ranchers are smarter than the ranchers in Canada...your shoot, shovel & shut-up policy covers up the incidence of BSE in your country. Give it a rest ...how can you try & keep the border closed when BSE is now suddenly showing up in Texas and who knows where else. The way I see it Canada should not bother trying to deal with a bunch of protectionists in Montana who couldn't give a rat's ass whether they cause thousands of slaughter house employees to lose their jobs or not..as long as they make more money.

Canadians have responded to the influx of U.S. citzens by proposing to block the cross-border traffic. I can't say I blame them; they are, after all, a very small population which is threatened with serving a population of nearly 300 million. Their drug costs are heavily subsidized by their government so the increased volume as a result of U.S. purchases will overtax their government health plan. I don't have a solution to suggest but judge that we should consider that imbalance. Our government's claim that the Canadian drugs may not be safe doesn't hold up well when it appears that those drugs come from the same sources as those available to U.S. citizens at higher cost. The drug industry must address this issue honestly and forthrightly and SOON!

I was very proud to get this article. Yes it sticks in my craw too, to know that we cannot get our medicine, but everything else. Poor people cannot afford the ridiculous prices here in the USA. My husband had cataracs taken off both his eyes, and the medicine drops for his eyes cost 1 for 50.00 and the other was 45.00. Luckily our insurance paid 75 Percent of that. But most people does not have any help on that, and they are worried sick. I am very upset over the whole deal. I know Bush is my president, But I didnt vote for him either time, and would not again if he could run. We are being sold out belive you me. Thanks again for the article. The day that our government see's this and opens up the border to trade of this kind., will be the day that the companies in this country will face the music and lower their prices. We do not see it as cutting Canada short on their supplies as much as forcing the American companies into fair pricing.
