I am ALL FOR a day for the Native Americans. They should have had a day A LONG TIME AGO! And I say it should be made soon. We have days for everyone else. What is really sad is they were here first, but you never hear them crying racism to get what they want. I think they deserve alot more than what they get. The world would not be such a crappy place if the Native Americans were still in charge of it... They are proud, and strong. And I give them my upmost respect.

I also think it is about time that the Native Americans be included in everything that the other nationalities are included in with the exception of Native Americans who were here when the White Nationality peoples from Europe and etc. can over here and stole the land and made treaties they did not keep with the Native peoples of what is now the United States of America. All commerical, talk shows, advertising, govermental news shows and all other people are mentioned Africian-American--Mexican-American--Asian=Americans however NO ONE SEEMS TO MENTION OR VISIT THE NATIVE AMERICANS. This is a very young country, to the foriegners, but to the indiginous people this is where our ancestors once lived. This land from Pacific to the Atlantic, Canada to S.A. was once inhabited by these people. Columbus symbolizes the beginning of the new world, "for the foriegners/illegal aliens", from Europe/Asia/Africa/etc.............. It marked the beginning to an end for the Indiginous people, Native American Indians, or so that was the plan. It was genocide of a race,,,,,,,,,,why,,,,,,,,for some it was greed at any cost. Babies, children, mothers, fathers and grandparents were killed so these alien foriegners could steal our ancestors land, our land. Today all this stolen land lives these peoples decendants, do you really know the history of the land you say is yours. There were good/bad people that came to this county, unfortunatly their were more bad. Blood was spilled on the ground/land, country by both sides, unfortunatly by some good that tried to make a home and by those that had their home lands taken. History can't be erased. The true history can be brought out into the open for all to really learn the true, but as some one put, "the government wouldn't want to open this can of worms", SHAME! So before anyone out there say's "hell no to a day for the true people, the Native American Indians" look at the real history of this great country. Schools don't teach it, never have. The true history as to what happened to all the people of this country, where did they go??????????? Is't been a shameful secret, only a fairy tale taught to the young, about how great columbus was. What's even more shameful is that the Federal Government backs up this shame by giving columbus his own day. That would be like Europe celebrating Hitler Day, hell no that's not going to happen, atleast Europe recognizes and is considerate to the people affected by that monster. Go back into history and you read about all the evil doings of men. Men like the ones that took thIS great country by spilling the blood of nearly all that inhabited it. They don't have a holiday celebrated for them?????????? ONLY IN AMERICA,,,,,,SHAME!!!! From North to South, East to West these lands, this country is long over due for the real history lesson.

For too long now the Native Americans have been second class citizens of this great country; a country that I might mention was theirs long before the white man came here. Why should we celebrate a day to honor someone that started the destruction of our people? This generation of Native Americans is the seventh generation since that faitful day so long ago and according to prophecies, this generation will see the Native Americans come together once again and stand up for what is right for the people. I say, let's all stand up and reclaim the rights that are ours by birthright! AHO!

I think it would of been ok if Columbus came to North America with good mind of thought, but he didn't. He savagely and cowardly slaughtered hundreds of Mative American for what, to claim and steal the so called "New World". Columbus is a Spaniard form Spain. They should of had "coward day" in Spain. As a enrolled tribal member of North America, I do not consider or recognize Columbus Day as a holiday in North America. As for Native American Day, it happened for me the day I was born.

I totally agree about the Native American Recognition. Let them pick their Day to celebrate. These people are so vast in their talents, crafts, and all their knowledge of survival-Life in General. I know so many Indians and spent time with several tibes. I would have given up my life to go live with them just to feel the Gratitude and closeness they have among them to survive. That touch of wildness yet gentleness and serenity. So many people actually have no idea about anything outside of their own little world and could care less about the originality of anything. It would be such a great world if we had to go back to the reality of survivng with the Natural things and all the wisdom of our ancesters. I feel the biggest problem of today is no Respect. It is time for everyone to take notice and get involved to better our world & recognize what got us here? Columbus Day should be on what date it is.

If you want to do a holiday for Indians, do it; but leave Columbus Day alone! Let themchoose a day for them to celebrate and they can celebrate it. We do not have to have a big holiday for it. When are we going to have a holiday to celebrate white peoples' day? When are we going to celebrate and honor Christians? This political correctness is going too far. My ancestors came from Germany and my parents taught me about my heritage. When is the Germans' holiday?

I am total agreement with you in what you propose. I am not a Native American but I also agree that Columbus did not discover this country as it had already been inhabited for a very long time. I also agree that Columbus Day should not be moved around every year to provide the American workers with another paid holiday. If they want to celebrate Columbus Day, fine, just leave it where it belongs and not have it as a paid holiday. You are so right is requesting that Native American Day is every bit as important as any of the other national holidays and it should be recognized. Dayle...Arkansas

I strongly feel that a National Holiday for Native Americans is long overdue. We owe them much more than that. Where is their place in our history? I feel that more should be taught in our schools. We have African American pride being taught. Why don't we hear more about Sacajawea, Pocohantas, Squanto and some of the Great Tribal Leaders? The truth,I believe is that our government feels it would open up a whole can of worms. Issues about how we treated these great people and the issue of "reparations." I don't feel a dollar amount can be placed on what they endured. nor should that be an issue for this generation to bear. But as far as a National Holiday, I say it's long time they got some respect. The past cannot be made up for, but the future can be different! Sincerely and with Great Respect, Brenda Lewis

Hi, I too believe that there should be a a special day set aside for American Indians. I also agree that it should not be JUST another day for the county to give another day off to federal & county employee's tho. The American Indians were here first and that should be enough to have a special day for them to celebrate. My Grandmother was a full blooded Indian from Canada that at that time was called the Ottawa tribe. She married my Grandfather against her tribes wishes, he was Candian w/Indian blood in him also but from another tribe. Which in those days was a disgrace to there tribes. I am PROUD of my Indian heritage and here in our state we have festvals during the summer for all the different nationalities and I Always am there for the Indian summer one. I love to be included and dance with them and watch the fancy dancers also. When asked what I am, I say Indian and proud of it. Lila Lee

It is a wonderful idea to have a holiday to honor American Indians, who are the only TRUE Americans living in our country. Too many years have gone by without this recognition. It is about time we show our appreciation for and gratitude to all American Indians. They have been pushed into the background for way too long a time. Let us bring them out of the shadows and celebrate them. Beverly, North Carolina.

I also feel that we should change Columbus day to Native American Day, although they (the Congress) has created new federal holidays for other leaders or just people who have done & said a lot for the progress of the country in the past, so I believe that they can also create a whole new day for the American Indians too.....these days, Native American and American Indian can be translated into being of American birth, etc., so it's not as easy to say when you're a Native American, that you are of an original American Indian tribal descent....I am of Cherokee heritage and very proud of being one of the descendants who were forced to walk the Trail of Tears during the removal of some of the tribal members....I know we have a Native American month at most of the colleges, so why isn't it just as easy to make a whole day created for them.
